Thank you to everyone who participated in our Contest! The entries were really great and hopefully everyone enjoyed looking at our customer’s photographs!

In the end, it came down to the wire and by a 2-1 vote, we’ve picked a winner…

Congrats to Scott Cammisa for his picture of his new puppy who looks like she is posing as she sits under a tree.

Been a while since I’ve had some time to get back to the Blog and drop some 411 on you guys.  Time to get this one in the books…

Facebook Likes

We’ve been on Facebook for a little while, maybe around 2 years.  In that time, we’ve amassed a following of 970 people who “LIKE” us.  We couldn’t be more happy with a number like that.  Facebook is a great way to get information out about our store, sales, deals and contests and doesn’t cost a dime!  Of course, we’ll always want more “LIKES” because the more people we can reach, the more people we can help and, hopefully, create more sales.  Obviously, if your friends or family do not “LIKE” our store on Facebook, give them a heads up to click that little button so that we can expand our name and services even more…

Sony Action Cam

You may or may not have heard of a company called GoPro.  They make a pretty decent video camera that can attach to helmets, bikes, skis, etc.  The GoPro name is basically the only name in extreme videography.  But, that doesn’t mean they are the best…

Sony makes a video camera that gives such a better picture.  It’s called the Sony Action Cam HDR-AS30V.  It comes with an underwater housing and mounts so that you can mount it to snowboards, jet skis, helmets and the like.  The main differences between the GoPro and the Action Cam is that the Sony has an excellent Image Stabilizer, much better than the GoPro.  On top of that, Sony puts a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens in their camera so the image is super sharp.  GoPro, well, their lens isn’t up to snuff.

If you are in the market for an action video camera, take a look at the Sony before going to the default GoPro…

Nikon D810

So, Nikon surprised everyone by announcing the Nikon D810 Full Frame dSLR.  Complete with 36.3 Megapixels, this camera should be a beauty as was the D800 & D800E.

That said, what the hell, Nikon?  1st off, the D810 was dropped in our laps the same time everyone else found out about it.  No advanced warning for your retailers, no big rebates on the now-defunct D800 for the customers.  Nothing.

2nd, they put a “new” sensor in the D810.  Guess what, it’s only “new” to Nikon because it is the Sony A7r sensor.  Yep, again, Nikon uses Sony’s sensor in their camera.  Not that it’s a bad thing because the Sony sensors are outstanding.  I would venture to guess that you’ll see very little resolution difference between the D810 and the D800/D800E.

3rd, because there are very few small improvements, I’m wondering who they think the customer is for this camera.  Most customers who would buy this already own the D800E.

But, hey, what do I know?  I just do this for 60 hours a week…

SIGMA 50mm f/1.4 DG

We’ve finally got some of the new SIGMA 50mm f/1.4 DG lenses in for Nikon mount.  This is the new ART lens that everyone is talking about.  It is absolutely tack sharp with really nice contrast and color and it should with a $950 price tag.  We haven’t received the Canon mounts in yet but I expect those in the next few weeks…

Song Recommendation

This blog’s Song Recommendation is “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker.  That song has been done by a lot of artists but I’ve always been a fan of Darius Rucker dating back to the Hootie and the Blowfish days.  His voice just sounds like it was made to sing this song.  See what you think and give it a listen.

It’s been real,

Blog #21

After a short break, the Blog returns with a few new products and general observations.  Thanks for taking the time to read the Blog!  Let’s get this show on the road…

Phottix Flash Package

I came across a package that I thought was one hell of a deal for our customers.  Working with my salesman, Jim, we now have a Phottix Mitros+ Flash Kit for Nikon and Canon with a ton of accessories.  Here’s what we have in our package…

Mitros+ Flash (with built in Transceiver) – Odin Transmitter (for the Camera) – Light Stand – Portable Softbox (slips over the flash) – 36 Inch Shoot Thru Umbrella – Umbrella Holder – Sand Bag – Gear Bag

All of that for $499!  That is less than the price of a Nikon SB-910 or a Canon 600EX-RT…

Nest Home Thermostat

No, we aren’t selling the Nest Home Thermostat.  But, with Father’s Day coming this weekend, if you aren’t buying him a camera from us, look into a Nest.  I have one in my house and I have to tell you, it is awesome!  You can control the A/C and Heat from your smartphone.  The damn thing will learn your schedule of when you are home and when you aren’t and can know when to heat or cool your house accordingly.  Go ahead and google it and read up on it if you have never heard of it.  It’s a little pricey for a thermostat but I think it’s definitely worth it…

Alright, here’s the deal with 35mm film.  It’s dead.  Actually it’s been dead for quite a while, it’s just that no one has thrown dirt on the grave.  We occasionally get customers still looking for 35mm film and we just don’t carry a lot of it anymore.  It’s hard for us to get and, quite frankly, it’s terribly expensive in 2014.  It’s a hard pill for some to swallow but digital is king and has been for a long time.  And if you still think that “film is better that digital”, you haven’t shot a good digital camera in about 6 years…

WONE 97.5 Commercial

I put together a commercial that is currently running on 97.5 WONE in regards to the Nikon D3300 and Father’s Day.  I’m always curious if people hear our commercials that I run on there fairly regularly.  If you hear it, let me know…

BlackRapid Straps

I’m getting more and more response to the BlackRapid Straps that we sell.  Almost everyone who buys it loves it.  I can only think of one customer who purchased it who didn’t like it.  He was worried that the screw would come loose.  So, I now sell the Tether Kit that connects the camera to the strap, sort of like a backup in case the screw did come out.  BlackRapid is a great product and one that I’m glad we carry…

Canon PowerShot D30

We recently got in the newest underwater digital camera from Canon, the PowerShot D30.  This camera goes up to 82 feet underwater!  Of course, if I go more than 15 or 20 feet under, I’m probably not coming back up.  Anyway, this little camera has some heft to it, it really feels solid.  They’ve come a long way since the D10 and the D30 would be a great camera for anyone headed to the beach, hanging out by the pool or doing some white water rafting…

Song Recommendation

This is probably the part of the Blog that I get the most feedback.  It’s cool that I get people telling me that they actually look up the songs I throw out there!  This weeks song is “Slave to the Rhythm” by Michael Jackson.  This is the song that was “performed” by the MJ Hologram on the Billboard Music Awards a few weeks back.  Cool song and mind-blowing visual watching the performance.  (Here’s the link to the Hologram Performance:

The Blog returns this week with a couple of new (and returning) deals for our customers!  Plus, some exciting new Rebates…

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5

We had a great sale on Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 a few months ago where we were selling the entire version of the software for $69.  Needless to say, it went very quickly.  After pulling some strings, I was able to bring the deal BACK to the store but again with only limited quantities.  I have Thirty pieces that will be here today (5/21) and are available to our customers.  A couple are already spoken for via a Facebook post I put out last night but if you are interested, please pick it up quickly.  These sell quick…

Seems like more and more cameras are starting to use MicroSD cards, the same ones used in phones.  We haven’t had a lot of them in stock but I just brought a ton of cards in stock.  They are made by Sony so you won’t have to worry about data corruption issues like some of the cheaper cards out there…

Canon Lens Rebates

Pretty big Rebates out there for Canon shooters right now.  If you’ve been in the market for better glass, there is no better time than now to buy a new lens.  Canon is doing a Mail-In Rebate program for as much as $300 on some lenses.  Some of the lenses that we have in stock are the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II ($300 Rebate), 24-70mm f/4 IS ($300 Rebate), 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro ($150 Rebate) and the 17-40mm f/4L ($100 Rebate).  Plus, there is a $200 Mail-In Rebate on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III body!  Come in and check out our extensive Canon inventory…

Voltix Portable 13,000 mAh Battery Pack

It’s been mentioned in a past blog but we are now carrying the Voltix Portable 13,000 mAh Battery Pack.  This is Power on the Go!  Charge your phone, tablet or camera with this external battery by just plugging it in.  A nice piece of gear to throw in your camera bag…

Cleveland Sports

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Cleveland sports.  It’s been a wild couple of weeks here in NE Ohio for us fans.  None more crazy than at last night’s NBA Lottery.  The Cavs had a 1.7% chance of getting the #1 pick and to the surprise of almost everyone, it happened.  There’s also a young man who owns a house in Bath, OH and works in South Beach that can be a Free Agent this year who would like to redeem his intials “LBJ” to the Cleveland faithful.

The Tribe has struggled this year but there is a lot of (young) talent on that team.  They are chasing a damn good team in Detroit.

On top of that, there is this circus sideshow called “Johnny Football” who was just drafted by our beloved Browns.  There’s a lot to be excited about for a fanbase that never really has anything to be excited about.

Sirui Monopod

Another new product we now have in stock is the Sirui P-204S Monopod.  Monopods can be really basic, they don’t have to do much.  Or, monopods can be ridiculously cool tools that help you take better pictures which this P-204S definitely does.  I can write an entire blog on this thing but I can give a quick rundown.  This monopod works as all monopods do and holds up to 17.6 lbs.!  Also, this thing can be taken apart and used as a tabletop tripod with a swivel head (we can show you how this works).  Lastly, this pod has a 360 degree panning hand grip so tracking is a breeze.  Really cool and priced at $159, the P-204S is one of the better monopods we carry…

Song Recommendation

This week’s song recommendation goes out to a customer of mine who just bought a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II in the last week from us.  He reads this blog and says he always checks out the songs I put up.  In our conversation, he said he’s a Metallica fan so I’m going to send out “Sad But True” as the recommendation this week.  My son and I love the minute or so long intro to that song!

It’s been real,

Welcome back to the blog.  There are a few things to cover this week so let’s get rollin’…

First off, I hope this blog finds you in a good place.  We’ve had some wicked weather come through NE Ohio over the last couple of days and lots of people have lost a lot of things due to flooding.  We’ve seen a lot of cool pictures of lightning but none of that matters when you’ve got thousands of dollars of loss due to 6 inches of water in your basement…

Phottix Gear

We’ve just restocked all of our Phottix Gear.  These are some nice flashes and accessories.  We are now carrying the Phottix Mitros (with power like a Nikon-SB910 or Canon 600EX-RT) and the Mitros+ (same as the Mitros but with a built in receiver for TTL off-camera shooting) flashes for Nikon and Canon.  Another product that we’ve had a great amount of success with is the Phottix Odin TTL Trigger system.  These work like PocketWizard, just without the PW price!  If you are into flash, whether on-camera or off, check out the Phottix brand that we carry…

Deep Thought

Here’s a quote that gave me a bit to chew on: “Not everyone is against you and not everyone is on your side.”

New Canon Lenses

Canon announced 2 new lenses to their already stellar lineup.  The first one is a full frame EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens.  I’ve got mixed feelings about this one already.  I mean, they already have a bad ass lens in the EF 17-40mm f/4L.  Their 16-35mm f/2.8L has always had troubles being consistently sharp.  So, does this new one replace both?  At roughly $1200, my guess is that it does.

The second lens has all sorts of promise in my eyes.  It is made for the crop-sensor cameras, a EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM.  The “STM” stands for Stepping Motor, basically means silent focus.  The big thing with this lens is that it is a super-wide without the super-high price tag.  Coming in at around $300, we look to sell a ton of these…

Online Store

I’m trying my best to put together an online store for Campus Camera & Imaging.  It’s way harder than I imagined because it’s almost like starting a brand new business.  New inventory, new email, a whole new business basically.  I’m trying and the readers of this blog will be the first to know when it is ready to go online…

Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4

In the last few weeks, we had both the Canon and Nikon mount of the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 in our store.  Zeiss touts it as the sharpest lens in the world and it is hard to argue.  Both have been sold with the Nikon mount going to Hawaii and the Canon mount headed to Boston, MA…

Song Recommendation

I’m going to wrap this edition of the blog up with yet another song recommendation.  It played from my playlist on my ride to work today and it’s been playing in my head over and over.  Check out “Bleed for Me” by Saliva and have yourself a outstanding day.
